AVB snaps as Lloris withdraws from Spurs squad over concussion fears

Andre Villas-Boas has claimed he was advised by the medical department to make a last minute decision not play Hugo Lloris against Newcastle on Sunday after a pre-match test called the Impact Test.

Even though the French international expected to play, Lloris was missing from the Tottenham squad to face Newcastle United on Sunday after being knocked unconscious at Everton - despite playing in the match seven days ago.

Lloris continued at Goodison Park after a collision with Romelu Lukaku, a decision for which Spurs and Villas-Boas in particular were heavily criticised.

Although the Spurs boss insists the player was 'fine', he has taken the advice, but wants someone from the medical team to explain the situation to the press.

Villas-Boas said: 'The medical department felt it was a bit too soon probably. If the game was tomorrow he would’ve played. I expect Hugo to play for France this week.

'But for him it was a bit too soon, even though clinically and medically all the signs were that the player was ready to play.

The Frenchman was rested for Thursday's Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol, with Villas-Boas claiming afterwards that he would return for the Barclays Premier League clash against the Magpies.

But he was not named in the matchday squad, leaving Brad Friedel surprised as a last minute stand-in once with Heurelho Gomes being named as the substitute goalkeeper.

Asked if something else had come to light about the condition of Lloris, Villa-Boas said: 'Nothing has come to light. The player is absolutely fine.

'The tests they have we don’t know. They’ve made different tests. In my opinion and obviously the club agree, it would be welcome if the medical department speak up about this situation.

'The only comment I can make is that the medical department advised us not to use the player, we followed rules and that’s it.

'In the incident we did everything according to the book.'

The Portuguese boss has attracted criticism for allowing Lloris to continue playing after the collision and seems to have been frustrated by the attention it has attracted.

'I’m not getting into that kind of argument. We did everything by the book,' he added. 'A medical dept which saved the life of a player deserves respect. They have made the call, advising the management not to use the player.

'It is into the controversy which has raged this week. So I’m not sure what you want to go on about.

'It was down to a test that they do, that they value a lot, called the Impact Test. I had to stick to what they said.'

Asked about the details of the Impact Test, Villas-Boas snapped, "Google it and find out.'

Writing on the club's official Twitter feed, Head of Medical Services Wayne Diesel said: 'We've continued to monitor Hugo all week and after discussions, Andre and the medical department have agreed to afford the player a couple more days rest.

'Hugo is naturally disappointed as he was keen to return to action, however we feel this decision is in the player's best interest.'

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew named the same starting XI which recorded a 2-0 win over Chelsea last weekend.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's match against Newcastle, Villas-Boas said: 'The medical department advised he still needed a couple more days so I would expect him to be back for the (World Cup) play-offs for France.'

Spurs had earlier been accused by a former United States international of endangering the life of Lloris after allowing him to continue against Everton.

The career of Taylor Twellman was ended after he was concussed a seventh time and the 33-year-old, who now campaigns to raise awareness over the damage caused by brain injuries in sport, is staggered by the actions of Tottenham and Villas-Boas.

Twellman insists Spurs 'played with Lloris' life' by putting him at risk of incurring 'second impact syndrome' - a second successive concussion that can lead to death or severe disability.

'It was ridiculous, but I'm actually grateful for what Tottenham did because it is 100 per cent not the way to handle a concussion,' Twellman told Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme.

'We're not talking about a career here, they played with Lloris' life.'

Villas-Boas said on Wednesday that those who criticised the club's actions over Lloris were 'incompetent people' but Twellman added: 'Anyone who tells me I'm uninformed or if AVB wants to tell me I'm incompetent, I'm not. Science has shown us there's no test that can show concussion.

'The fact Tottenham issue a statement after the game saying they went through all the tests on the sideline...

'I watched it live. The trainers stopped Lloris twice to convince him to come off the field. I saw his team-mate Michael Dawson talk to him twice to come off the field.

'Don't tell me the evaluation as you were trying to convince him to come off the field all of a sudden changes to say he was suited to play the game.

'No human being can see concussion and be 100 per cent certain there's no concussion.

'If you get a second one while you have that first one, there is something called second impact syndrome. That is often fatal.'

Twellman's career ended in 2008 when he was punched in the head by a goalkeeper in a Major League Soccer match, played the remainder of the game and the ensuing seven weeks that were left of the season.

The damage to his brain caused by the incident and the previous concussions forced him to retire, however, and now he has difficulty concentrating and must keep his heart rate below 130 beats per minute to avoid crippling headaches.

'My life has never been the same since,' he said. 'I immediately went through testing on the field, they're supposedly the same tests that Lloris did at Tottenham and those tests don't work.

'You can't address a concussion or dramatic brain injury that quickly.

'I don't blame anyone, but the reality is I did consult doctors and trainers yet stayed in the game and played.

'Why was Lloris on the field? He had been knocked out cold.'

The more AVB says he got it right, the more daft he looks.

Contrast AVB's attitude with that if AW on the subject. You see one manager who wants to win but values ayers long term health and the other who wants to win at any costs. He just had to hold up his hand and say that he got it wrong and should not have left the decision to the player. He would have got far more respect and trust than he currently has. - Kanu,, London,England, 11/11/2013 10:09 Am I missing something or has this muppet not realised that aw actually left on the goalkeeper too.

So according to AVB he was ok to play right after getting knocked out, but a week later he's deemed unfit because of it. Shocking judgement by AVB

Everton are lucky to have come out of this situation unblemished. Did their player act intentionally, were their fans disrespectful to an injured player? Some would claim that the answer to both is yes.
